In Sterling, Virginia, on this date in 2007, three white males are alleged to have assaulted a Hispanic man by punching him while hurling racial slurs at him. The 46-year old victim reported that the teens formed a wall around him preventing him from escaping from the assault which occurred outside a
CVS store in Sterling. One of the teens—a 17-year-old—faces assault, abduction, hate crime, possession of narcotic paraphernalia, and possession of alcohol charges. The second teen, a 16-year-old from Sterling, faces assault, and possession of alcohol and abduction charges. The abduction charges stem from the alleged "wall" created by the teens which prevented the victim from fleeing.
In Evans, Georgia (Columbia County), the home and vehicle of a gay couple—John Aiu and William Pendleton—were significantly vandalized in a hate crime attack. The outside of their home was painted with profane anti-gay remarks, paint was thrown on their car and its windshield smashed. Mr. Aui and Mr. Pendleton discovered the vandalism in the morning on this date in 2009.
In Homer, Louisiana on this date in 2009, an African-American man who could not speak because he had had throat cancer, Bernard Monroe, 73, was shot to death during a family barbeque at his home by a white Homer police officer, Tim Cox, who had been on Homer's police force for only a few weeks. A second white police officer—one who has not been publicly identified—is then said to have planted Mr. Monroe's handgun on the ground next to Monroe's body in front of eyewitnesses to make it appear that the unarmed victim had been armed when he was shot. The Louisiana State Police subsequently launched an investigation into the murder to determine if it was race-based.
In the early morning hours near the Austin City Hall underground parking garage in Austin, Texas on this date in 2010, four men attacked Emmanuel Winston and Matthew Morgan, two young gay men who had just left a nearby gay bar wearing their gay softball league uniforms and who were walking to their cars parked at the garage. The four black assailants between the ages of 20 and 25 shouted anti-gay slurs during the attack and were spotted on surveillance camera nearby after the attack that left Mr. Winston with bruises and cuts to his face.
