January 9

At the First Baptist Church in Charleston, West Virginia, on this date in 2008, a second rally was held to raise awareness about hate crimes and to decry the race-based kidnapping-torture-assault in Logan County in the summer of 2007 of an African-American woman, Megan Williams, 20. As of the date of this second rally, Ms. Williams' week-long ordeal allegedly at the hands of six white people was not considered or classified as a hate crime by the prosecuting attorney in the case, despite evidence that racial slurs were yelled at Ms. Williams during her seven-day long attack. The first rally for Ms. Williams occurred on November 3, 2007, with an estimated 1,000 people marching through downtown Charleston. Unfortunately and ironically, the November 3rd rally was led by none other than a member of a hate group: Malik Zulu Shabazz who at the time was chair of the black separatist hate group—the New Black Panther Party (New Black Panther Party for Self-Defense). On October 21, 2009, several days after receiving death threats, Megan Williams claimed that the hate crime against her was a hoax—a desperately made assertion apparently in hopes of quelling the death threats made against her. On October 21, 2009, several days after receiving death threats, Megan Williams claimed that the hate crime against her was a hoax—a desperately made assertion apparently in hopes of quelling the death threats made against her.

On this date in 2009 in the United States District Court in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the black separatist hate group, the New Black Panther Party for Self-Defense, including members Minister King Samir Shabazz and Jerry Jackson, had a federal lawsuit filed against them by the Justice Department for allegedly violating Section 11(b) of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which prohibits intimidation, coercion or threats against "any person for voting or attempting to vote."
