In Elk Creek, California, in Glenn County on this date in 2007, Christopher Wayne Fisher, 22, of nearby Willows, California, is alleged to have attacked two Stony Gorge Market employees. Fisher, who was charged on suspicion of committing battery with serious bodily injury plus a special allegation that the crime was racially motivated, is alleged to have yelled "Speak English, this is America" to the store's owner, Mr. Sumitiarpal Sharma, 59, who was speaking on the telephone in his native language. Allegedly Fisher hit Mr. Sharma's son, Guarev Kumas Sharma, 23, and also allegedly attempted to attack a third member of the Sharma family, Sonu, 21, while allegedly yelling expletives and racial slurs.

In Blaine, Minnesota, in suburban Minneapolis, on this date in 2008, arson destroyed the Blaine Dairy at 385 109th Avenue Northeast by three men who entered the convenience store carrying a paper bag and glass bottles which they then lit on fire. Police have said the crime may be bias motivated and the FBI is investigating the crime. The owner, Mohammad Ismail, who is Muslim, suffered minor burns and other minor injuries, and police also found a slur directed toward Arabs spray-painted on the west wall of the building where the Blaine Dairy had been.
