In 2007 on this date in Merrillville, Indiana, an African-American couple was beaten in front of their home. The two white assailants, both men, returned to the couple's home and smashed the windshield of the couple's car, then spray-painted the word "nigger" all over it. Mr. Darian Brown, whose wife was pregnant at the time of the attack, reported that the assailants—one of whom said they were going to run all Blacks out of town—fled in a 1970's brown Ford car with "In God We Trust" on their Indiana license plate.
On this date in 2008 in Aurora, Illinois, Juan Recio, 19, and John Chapman, 18, pleaded guilty to hate crime charges after telephoning a couple about twenty times in October, 2006 and uttering racial slurs during those phone calls. Both were ordered to perform 200 hours of community service each, and both were placed on two years probation.
On this date in 2008 in Hartford, Connecticut, Connecticut’s Judiciary Committee voted 43-0 to make noose hanging on public or private property a crime, if it is meant to harass or intimidate. The vote on Senate Bill 604 came on the heels of a July, 2007, incident and an August, 2007 incident where nooses were placed at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut.
On this date in 2010 in the Whitestone section of Queens in New York City, a Latino student at Junior High School 194, Victor Echeverria, 15, was attacked by three teens and called a "spic" while playing basketball with friends in what police called a hate crime. On March 29, 2010 the three male assailants—two 15-year-olds and a 14 year-old—were each charged with assault and menacing as hate crimes during their appearances in Queens Family Court.
In Plainfield, Illinois, on this date in 2011, a white man, Jacob D. Kozak, 23, of Plainfield was arrested and charged with a hate crime. Allegedly, on either March 10 or March 17, 2011, (media reports provided two conflicting dates) Kozak made anti-Semitic comments directed at his neighbor who said "Hello" to Kozak as he and his wife walked past Kozak who was working on his car. Kozak, who lived with his parents at the time, also allegedly made death threats against his Jewish neighbor and the man's wife; specifically, Kozak is alleged to have said, "I'm going to kill you if you don't get out of my neighborhood." If convicted as charged (a hate crime charge is a Class 4 felony in Illiniois), Kozak could be sentenced to one to three years in prison. Kozak, who was held at the Will County Adult Detention Center following his arrest, has had previous altercations with neighbors. In addition, on January 22, 2011, Jacob Kozak was charged with driving with a suspended/revoked license by Plainfield police.
