On this date in 2010 just south of Ganges Township, Michigan (Allegan County), it was discovered that someone spray-painted a swaskita and the phrase "Fags Dont Belong" on a wooden fence along 118th Avenue west of 66th Street at the Campit Outdoor Resort, an adult, members-only campground just south of Saugatuck, Michigan. It is not uncommon for residents of nearly all white communities to engage in bias-motivated crimes or to be charged with hate crimes, and as of the 2000 U.S. Census Ganges Township was 93.38% White, and only 0.48% African American, 0.75% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 4.12% from other races, and 1.07% from two or more races. Hispanics or Latinos of any race constituted 11.93% of the population in Ganges Township in 2000.
In Sandy, Utah, on this date in 2011, three unnamed Alta High School students were issued Unlawful Acts in School (class B misdemeanor) citations for their alleged involvement in having one student wear a KKK-styled pillowcase over his head at a school rally on March 18, 2011. That student also allegedly made pro-Neo-Nazi statements at the rally. Additionally, two of the students cited also allegedly sent text pictures of burning crosses on their mobile phones. None of the students were charged with a hate crime. It is not uncommon for residents of nearly all-white towns to be charged with hate crimes (regardless of the bias motivation for the hate crime) or to be involved in bias-motivated incidents. The Canyons School District sent a letter addressed to "Parents and Students Within the Alta Feeder System" condemning hatred and racism; and, the letter also said a school district investigation uncovered evidence of other serious incidents at Alta High School on March 18, 2011.
