For the Love of God
"We wondered about possible associations between hate crimes, hate groups, rates of membership of various religions, and other sociometric measures that might exist which could help explain the apparent disconnect between our religious selves and our hateful selves..."
Why Like Mike?
"Mike Huckabee has never rebuked the Council of Conservative Citizens. Instead he embraced the group, ignoring its well known legacy of promoting racism and only severing ties when his political ambitions were threatened by bad publicity..."
How We Keep Lynching Blacks
"Over 4,700 such mob executions were documented between 1882 and 1968, and almost three-quarters of the victims were black. ... Almost certainly there were other, undocumented lynchings during this 86-year period. As we will show in this report, the dehumanization of blacks—often a physically violent dehumanization—unmistakably continues in America..."
Got Out the Hate Vote?
"Trendsinhate wondered if something else might have been operating to push the Republicans to victory in 2004. Hate. Or, its predecessor: Intolerance. To explore this possibility, we examined the 2004 presidential voting results across the United States to see if George W. Bush fared better in communities with an active hate group (hate group communities or HGCs) than he did in the state in which those HGCs are located..."
Hate Groups and Poverty: 1998-2004
"In what types of communities do hate groups arise? Are there any characteristics that communities with an active hate group (hate group communities or HGCs) have that communities with no active hate group (nonHGCs) do not have? Or, do hate groups find themselves functioning in random communities across the United States?"
Hot Spots of Hate
"The four American hot spots of hate from 1996-2006 include densely populated metropolises (e.g, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Houston, Los Angeles, & San Diego), suburban areas, and less densely populated, essentially rural and/or rural/coastal regions (e.g., Baldwin County, Alabama)..."
Gay-Related Hate Murders: A Decade-Long Epidemic
"Although about 2% of the U.S. adult population is thought by experts to be homosexual (gay or lesbian) ... the FBI’s data indicate that 22.61% of all hate-crime homicides ... were due to anti-gay bias.
Hate Crime Incidents: From Election Day to Inauguration Day
"Barack Obama's success aroused the hateful passions of more than a few Americans...Going beyond the headlines, we examine here in detail those hate crime incidents that have come to our attention that were fueled by Obama's election victory and by his assuming the office of the president...there was no randomness to these crimes; rather, similar forces were operating in places with similar histories regardless of where, what, when and why they occurred."
Hate Crimes & The Economy: From The Dot Com Boom to The Height of The Great Recession
Contrary to claims made in the media that hate crimes increase during harsh economic times, we found no correlation between annual changes in state unemployment rates and annual changes in state hate crime rates. Correlations between stock market performances and hate crime activity were also unrelated. The “competition for scarce resources” explanation as a broad cause of hate crime perpetration, which is a hypothesis we debunk in this report, does not lead to answers about why bias-motivated crimes rise and fall over time. In our view, the hypothesis only serves to distance hate crime perpetrators from their crimes.
